Keep Training!

Training Capoeira has its challenges.  Sometimes it becomes difficult to remember why you started in the first place.  We have all been at that point, some of us multiple times.  You may not believe it yet, but the day will come when you will question why you train Capoeira.  At that point, I would encourage you to remember back to the reasons you started training in the first place.  When those doubts have come, I feel like that has been what has kept me going.

I think that training Capoeira has been one of the best things I have ever done for myself.  It has made me strong, flexible and agile.  I am more agile now than when I was a teenager.  The older I become, the more I realize that Capoeira is helping me to age better than those my age who do not train.  Capoeira has also given me a place to belong, great friends all over the world, and a place to raise James surrounded by friends who love him and look out for him.  I would not trade the experiences and friendships I have gained for anything.  I encourage you to become friends with your fellow group members.  They will help you when you feel like quitting.

When I started Capoeira in 1999, I asked Mestre Loka what it takes to become a Mestre of Capoeira.  He told me "just stick with it no matter what and you will get there...look around you today to all those students you are training with...in 5 years they will all be gone...Capoeira is about time and experience, eventually you will have more experience than most people around you and you will be a Mestre...IF YOU STICK WITH IT."  That was the best advice I have been given and I want to pass that on to you.  Stick with Capoeira and it will help you in your life to live healthier, happier and better.

Now, honestly at the time I thought Mestre Loka was wrong.  There were 60 students in the group I trained with who were ahead of me.  I thought "no way they will all be gone in 5 years, they love Capoeira."  The truth is that 5 years later he was right.  They were all gone.  I am the only one left from that group and I am extremely grateful to still be training Capoeira.  When you feel like giving up, remember to enjoy the journey of Capoeira and that with time that everything will come together.  If you ever feel like quitting, please call me so I can know how you are feeling and so I can try to help in any way that I can.
